Every text-book of ophthalmology mentions "rheumatic" iritis and iridocyclitis, either as the sole manifestation of the rheumatic state or as one of a series of rheumatic symptoms. It appears, however, that this type of eye lesion is not associated with rheumatic conditions in general, but only with the clearly defined complaint known as ankylosing spondylitis. We have studied some thousands of patients with rheumatic fever and have very rarely seen any ocular complications or iritis or iridocyclitis in particular. In no case has iritis been observed in
